There’s a brand new horse-focused TV present on the town, or at the very least on Apple+, that’s grabbing consideration and headlines. The four-part docuseries Cowboy Cartel, which started streaming in August, has been selecting up steam.
The collection follows a rookie FBI agent who cracked the case of certainly one of Mexico’s most ruthless cartels, Los Zetas, and the multimillion-dollar cash laundering operation they ran via the center of the American Quarter Horse racing trade.
“The very first thing I mentioned once I heard the story was, ‘Is that this actual?’” co-director and co-executive producer Dan Johnstone advised My San Antonio. “It was such a sprawling story. For us, it was about getting folks to … actually see the emotion of those communities being broken by these nefarious actions. As soon as we understood that, it was, no pun supposed, off to the races.”
Cowboy Cartel options first-time interviews with the FBI agent and unlikely hero Scott Lawson from rural Tennessee whose investigation took down the Treviño brothers, the leaders of the Los Zetas cartel.
As you will note from the collection, the Treviños terrorized folks of their pursuit of energy, cash and affect, whereas Agent Lawson risked his life on a hunch: monitoring their brother’s Quarter Horse racehorse transactions in america, infiltrating the lethal cartel and uncovering their worldwide cash laundering operations.
It’s riveting true crime at its finest, with loads of attractive horses as eye sweet.
